The Akhult
There have been rare occasions in which an Akhlut has been subdued and tamed by a particularly determined rider. This has only been successfully done a handful of times, but it is rumored that if one can chase off an attack by the Akhlut pack while keeping one of their number from escaping, an opportunity to attempt to "break" the captured Akhlut is created. This is by no means an easy task as those who attempt to tame the beast must first manage to mount the creature without being eaten. If this is accomplished, the Akhlut will fly into a rage, doing everything in it's power to throw the rider. It might do anything from running in circles and bucking to diving into icy depths and swim at high speeds to freeze the one who has dared tackle the challenge.
Common Akhlut:
These are the most common forms of the aklhult. They are strong and aggressive, however they are much more suited for land then the water depths. They use their teeth and claws to viciously assault opponents. When mounted they will buck and thrash wildly, rolling over and doing everything in their power to dismount the rider in order to escape. They run fairly quickly, at thirty (30) miles an hour with sudden bursts of speed much like a cheetah's that will enable them to reach forty five (45) miles an hour. They are strong, weighing in around half a ton of pure muscle.
Diving Akhlut:
These Akhlut are much more in touch with their watery habitat then their common brethren, and being less common then the other. They have the same body style, with their teeth and talons, however they much prefer an ambushing style of attack. They will come up from beneath a foe through the ice, attempting to snare them in their fangs and drag them in to a icy aquatic grave. In defense they will attempt to smash opponents with their powerful tails and when mounted with throw themselves in to the frigid waters and swim around at speeds in excess of thirty five (35) miles an hour to attempt to freeze and drown their assailant. However they are less suited to a land style of life and thus only run at a steady pace of twenty five (25) miles an hour.
Akhlut Prime:
The fabled leaders of the Akhlut packs. The Lords of their packs and rumored to be the descendants of a fabled pack of Akhlut commons who learned the ways of their diving brethren. They are smarter, stronger, and faster then their brethren and protect them viciously. They fight with both body, mind, and even magic to destory their foes. No known Prime has ever been tamed.
Taming the Beasts
In obtaining Akhlut, one must start a mini-quest in an area north of the 60th parallel north (i.e., Alaska, Northern Russia, Sweden, Finland, Greenland). A Common Akhlut's quest must be 25 posts long. A Diving Akhlut's quest must be 35 posts long. An Akhlut Prime requires a quest of no less than 50 posts and the receiver of an Akhlut prime will lose two abilities (or their equivalent) in battle. These abilities will be the two abilities given permanently to the Akhlut Prime (they may never gain more). A minimum of two adventurers must go on a quest for the Akhlut, though one will most likely die. Three is the recommended minimum number of adventurers for this feat.
